CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

The Great Library, Timbuktu, Mali, Africa

Choking on the smoke from the fire, Rose waved her hand through the air, having put Paternus away since the danger seemed to be gone. Elvis said he’d only spotted two figures, a man and the witch.

“What did the man look like?” Rose asked, stamping out the last of the smoldering embers on the carpet of the Great Library.

“He had a head and shoulders and was wearing clothes,” Elvis answered, beating at a book that was singed with fire, trying to keep the damage from spreading.

Rose revolved her gaze on the Chinese dragon, giving him an annoyed expression. “Can you be more specific?”

“He’s right,” Rudolf said, running around a nearby row to the left, speeding to join them. “That description is accurate. I saw him from a distance.”

Rose rolled her eyes at the pair of them. “I was just thinking maybe we could get a bit more specific. Like what color hair and skin and any defining characteristics?” She glanced at the king. “Did you recognize him as any of the Fierce you know of?”

He shook his head. “No, that’s what I’m saying. The man had spelled himself to look nondescript.”

“Like glamoured?” Rose asked.

Again, he shook his head. “No, like he was blurry. That was his disguise so he wasn’t recognized if spotted. He appeared like a photo out of focus. Looking at him, you can tell he’s a man, but nothing specific. And he’s definitely not a real man if he’s betraying his oath as a Fierce.”

“And definitely not a good man if he’s helping witches, taking orders from them like he was doing,” Elvis said, picking up a book and inspecting it for damage. “I can’t believe that horrid soulless monster threw all those books.”

“Well, in that Fierce’s defense, he sounded like he was protesting the damage the witch was doing,” Rose said, searching the area for any other places that needed their help. “But next time, can you not use fire magic in the Great Library? Books are flammable, remember?”

Elvis hung his head, nodding shamefully. “Yeah, sorry about that. I wanted to stop that black-toothed demon.”

“And you almost did,” Rose said, turning her attention to King Rudolf. “And you almost got to the Fierce?”

He shook his head. “Not really. By the time I caught up to him, he was too far away for me to send a spell at. Otherwise, I could have taken down his disguise and got a look at his betraying face.”

Rose was about to console him, telling the fae that things hadn’t been a complete loss. However, she was interrupted when the sight of her Aunt Sophia came into view from the front of the Great Library. The leader of the Dragon Elite and Rogue Riders appeared alarmed and also beautiful as she ran down the long main passageway, making her way to them.

Rose was shocked by Sophia’s speed when she blurred, making it to them faster than could be humanly possible. However, she reminded herself that since Sophia had the chi of the dragon that she wasn’t really human.
